WINNERS announced - January 25th, 2012
Following an exciting "Dragon's Den" judging event we have selected the two winners of the NCD Challenge competition. They are:
For the Developing World
University of California Berkeley, Haas School of Business, 2 Vidas
2Vidas is a pharmacy-based membership program for low-to middle-income pregnant women to slow the growing diabetes epidemic in Mexico. Based on the team’s field research in Mexico City, It is an integrated and accessible solution that provides three main benefits to pregnant women with diabetes to help them control their blood sugar levels during pregnancy:
· Access to health monitoring tools at a partner pharmacy chain at any time
· Motivation through peer-led community sessions
· Education and reinforcement though positive SMS messaging and reminders
By improving diabetes management in the mother, 2Vidas reduces the risk to the unborn child, breaking the cycle in which diabetes passes from generation to generation.
For the Developed World
Esade Business School, Ramon Llull University, Spain, Dr Diabetes
Dr. Diabetes is a total solution for diabetes awareness, monitoring, and management based on smart phone technology, designed for urban China. Dr Diabetes benefits stakeholders across the diabetes management ecosystem. It builds up the remote connection between patients, physicians, and pharmacies. It brings early awareness to the public and streamlines the treatment process of the patients. It also provides medical data to physicians for accurate diagnosis, and to pharmaceutical companies and hospitals for efficient R&D.
These were selected from 8 outstanding shortlisted entries, which in turn were selected from the 16 solutions submitted.
Although both solutions were developed with specific countries in mind, both could be applied more broadly to different communities and countries.
There were close runners up in each category, both from the Saїd Business School, Oxford University,: Oxford Asthma - Low-cost solution for large scale monitoring and diagnosis of asthma and COPD: Smart Strip - A non-invasive, mobile blood glucometer band that measures blood glucose transdermally
Other finalists in the competition include:
- DiaMapp, from Jordan University. Smart phone technology for managing diabetes type 1 in children, empowering patients and their families to care for themselves
- Move4Health, from Karolinska Institutet. Prescription for physical activity by physicians, targeted for Vietnam. supported by mobile technology to measure activity and provide healthcare follow up
- My Health Portal, from ESADE Business School, Ramon Llull University. Secure online portal based on cloud technology that bridges the communication gap between patient and doctor
- TeleHealth, from the University of Melbourne. A highly innovative integrated telehealth solution that can globally individualize the care and management of people with diabetes.

What could you contribute to solve this pressing healthcare challenge? NCDs are a serious and increasing burden for individuals, healthcare providers and public authorities and the statistics* are alarming:
- Twice as many people die from chronic rather than infectious diseases
- Four diseases – cardiovascular, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases – are responsible for 63 per cent of global deaths
- That’s 35 million people a year
- And nearly 80 per cent of those deaths occur in low-income and middle- income countries
- NCDs are expected to increase by 17% during the next decade. By 2015, that means 41 million deaths a year.
